Painting for me is a principled craft. My work is an act of recognition, imagination and reconciliation. I am equally interested in the narrative tradition of still life painting and the depiction of a silent, beautiful moment; of complex concepts and the beauty of the ordinary and universally familiar.

My paintings are depictions of the rich world where most, but not all is illuminated. My subjects live in raking light, complicated, intricate and familiar, yet separate from us in a way we will never fully understand. I enjoy giving visibility to this elements which are often unseen, unknown or overlooked.

Recalling the Spanish and Northern European masters, I maintain a contemporary sensibility. I always paint from life and vacillate between an image of stark simplicity or an image rich in complex interactions, dialogues and symbols. My primary formal concerns are capturing light, form, and the rich metaphysical weight of objects, as well as exploring the endless possibilities of composition.
