![]() If producing art is the deliberate arrangement of items, then the art of Mel McCuddin may not be entirely art. He would tell you that he does not know what will come of each canvas once he begins. McCuddin's application of paint continually instructs the next application of paint; and in the end an image appears. These images are often people, animals, and objects. They all have an identifiable aesthetic and are consistent in pallet and structure. The tone of his work borders comedy that is begging to be drama and is always narrative. His work -- for all of this -- looks thought out. For decades the artist has painted this way and for decades he has not forged a path knowing the conclusion. For this, Mel McCuddin’s work carries with it a curiosity that hundreds of collectors have identified with. Why? When you strip down the expectation and concern yourself more with the act, rather than the result, you are left with one thing: Fun! |
